This olive-oil black soap with lavender essential oil is produced by Fer à Cheval, one of Marseille’s historic soapmakers still using the traditional cauldron method.

Before specialised household cleaners became common, many homes relied on simple soap solutions prepared from traditional vegetable-oil soap. Black liquid soap — known as Savon Noir — is one of the most widely used examples of this approach.

Savon Noir is produced by slowly cooking vegetable oils in large cauldrons using the traditional Marseille soapmaking method. Unlike solid Savon de Marseille, potassium salts are used during the process, allowing the soap to remain in liquid form.

Diluted in warm water it forms a concentrated soap solution widely used for household cleaning, degreasing and washing.
