What to buy new parents when you want the gift to last

Most baby gifts have a shelf life of about four months. Muslin wraps, newborn sizes, the toy that plays one song. Parents are grateful and the pile goes to the loft by spring.

If you want to give something that survives the first year, you have to buy against the grain of the baby aisle. That means furniture, and it means spending in a range most people find uncomfortable to spend alone.

Here is how to do it well.

Buy the thing they will keep converting

The single best nursery gift is a crib that becomes a toddler bed. Parents who receive one stop shopping for that category entirely, and the piece stays in the room for four or five years.

Nestig, a New York nursery brand, builds their range around this. The Wave Crib is listed at $849 and converts as the child grows. The Cloud Crib and Cove Crib sit at $899. The Briar Crib is $999. Their line runs on the idea that a nursery should not be replaced when the newborn stage ends, which they put on the site as "built to grow, styled to stay."

The furniture that follows the crib works the same way. Nestig lists the Briar Assembled Dresser at $1,399, the Drift Glider Recliner from $1,099, and the Starling Rocking Chair at $799. A glider is the item new parents use more than anything else in the house and the item they are least likely to buy for themselves at full price.

If a crib is too much for one person, make it a group gift

A $849 crib is a normal price for six people and an unusual price for one. Grandparents, a workplace, a group of friends. The mechanics are the constraint, not the goodwill.

Two ways to handle it.

Split it and let one person order. Whoever places the order attaches the gift message, so every name in the group appears on the note the parents read. The gift arrives as one gift from a group rather than as a purchase from whoever happened to hold the card.

Send a gift card instead. Nestig sells gift cards, which solves the harder problem: you do not know what the nursery looks like. Parents choosing their own crib in their own colour is a better outcome than you guessing. A gift card also lets six people contribute separately without anyone doing the accounting.

If you want to spend under $150

The bedding and decor range is where the good small gifts live. Crib sheets run $55 to $65 in patterns like Gingham, Stardust, Seascape and Watercolor Safari. The Safari Mobile is $119. Wallpapers start at $45. Montessori bookshelves in the Briar and Cove lines are $379, which is the sweet spot for a group of three or four colleagues.

Sheets are the one baby item that never goes unused, and parents rarely buy the nice ones.

Give it before the birth, not after

New parents receive most of their gifts in the two weeks after the birth, which is the fortnight they have the least attention for any of it. Furniture is the exception. Send it during the third trimester while the room is still being set up and the gift becomes part of how the nursery looks, rather than another box in the hallway.

Nestig runs a Registry Picks collection, which tells you what other parents actually chose.

Write the note as if they will keep it

Parents keep the card that came with the crib. They do not keep the card that came with the socks. If you are spending on furniture, spend two minutes on the message, and make it about the room the child is going to grow up in rather than congratulations.

For brands: why baby is the strongest gifting category on Shopify

If you run ecommerce for a baby or nursery brand, the pattern above is your best acquisition channel and it probably is not measured anywhere in your reporting.

Across the brands running gifting programmes on Giftnote, baby and kids sits at a 7.6% median programme ROI, the highest of any category we track. Fashion is close behind at 7.4%. Food sits at 3.0%.

Three things drive it.

The gifter and the recipient are different people, and both are customers. Someone buys a crib for a person who has never heard of you. That recipient is net new, and 74% of gift recipients across our merchant base are.

The occasions are not December. Baby showers, births and first birthdays land year round. Nursery brands see steady demand across all twelve months rather than one December spike, which makes gifting a stable channel instead of a seasonal one.

The purchase carries unusual emotional weight. A gifter buying for a new baby spends well above what they would spend on themselves, and the recipient remembers where the piece came from every time they walk into the room.

The gap for most brands is capture. A gift order in Shopify records the gifter's email and nothing else. The recipient, the net new customer, is invisible. Capturing their opt-in at the moment they receive the gift, and segmenting them separately in Klaviyo from people who bought for themselves, is the difference between a gift order and an acquired customer.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good gift for new parents that they will actually keep?

Nursery furniture, particularly a convertible crib that becomes a toddler bed, a glider, or a dresser. These stay in use for four or five years, unlike clothing and newborn accessories, which are outgrown within months.

How much do people spend on a baby shower gift?

Individual gifts typically run $50 to $150. Furniture sits between $800 and $1,400, which is why cribs and gliders are usually handled as group gifts from grandparents, a workplace or a friendship group.

How do you give a group gift for a baby without splitting the order?

One person places the order and attaches a gift message naming everyone who contributed, or the group buys a gift card so the parents choose the item themselves. Gift cards work better when you do not know the nursery's colour scheme.

When should you send a nursery gift?

During the third trimester, while the room is being set up. Furniture sent after the birth arrives in the busiest fortnight the parents will have.

What does Nestig sell?

Nursery furniture and decor, including convertible cribs, gliders, rocking chairs, dressers, Montessori bookshelves, crib sheets, wallpaper and wall murals, plus gift cards and a registry collection.

Why do baby brands do well with gifting programmes?

Because the person receiving the gift is usually new to the brand, the occasions run year round rather than clustering at Christmas, and the average order is higher than a self-purchase. Baby and kids brands show the highest median programme ROI of any category on Giftnote at 7.6%.
